Understanding the Cost of Electrolysis Hair Removal

How many sessions will I need & how much will Electrolysis cost me?

Electrolysis hair removal is the only choice if you are looking for a permanent solution to unwanted hair. The amount of sessions needed and the cost of electrolysis can vary depending on several factors, including age, gender, ethnicity, and hormonal influences. In this article, we will explore how these factors can affect the cost of electrolysis and provide you with valuable insight for determining if this method of hair removal is right for you.

Factors Affecting the Cost:

1. Treatment Area and Density: The size and density of the treatment area are significant factors in determining the cost of electrolysis. Larger areas, such as the legs or back, generally require more time and sessions, leading to higher costs. Additionally, individuals with dense hair growth may require additional sessions to achieve the desired results.

2. Time and Sessions: Electrolysis typically requires multiple sessions to target hair follicles in different stages of growth. The number of sessions needed can vary depending on individual factors such as age, gender, and hormonal influences. Older individuals or those with hormonal imbalances may require more sessions, leading to increased costs. Your commitment to your making your scheduled appointments is paramount. If you are consistent with your appointments, you will see results quickly. If you miss appointments, your results will take longer to achieve.

3. Age: Age can affect the cost of electrolysis due to the nature of hair growth. Younger individuals generally have more active hair follicles and may require additional sessions to achieve permanent hair removal. Older individuals may have fewer active hair follicles, which can reduce the number of sessions needed.

4. Gender: Gender can influence the cost of electrolysis. For example, individuals assigned male at birth (AMAB) typically have coarser and denser hair, which may require more sessions compared to individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB) who often have finer hair. The total cost can vary based on the time and effort required to treat the specific hair characteristics.

5. Ethnicity: Ethnicity can also impact the cost of electrolysis. Individuals with darker skin tones or certain ethnic backgrounds may require additional precautions or specialized equipment to minimize the risk of pigmentation changes or other complications. This can lead to higher costs due to the expertise and resources required for safe treatment.

6. Hormonal Influences: Hormonal factors, such as imbalances or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can affect hair growth patterns. Hormonal influences may require additional sessions or specialized treatment plans, which can increase the overall cost of electrolysis. This isn’t just applicable to women. It applies to men, as well. Men can also have hormone imbalances.

7. Medications & Supplements: Some medications & supplements can change hormone levels in your body, triggering abnormal facial or body hair growth. This is why it’s important to include any and all medications & supplements you are taking on your Client Treatment form, so that your electrologist will know if they impact hair growth.

Age, gender, ethnicity, hormonal influences, genetics and medications all play a role in determining the number of sessions, the size of the treatment area, treatment duration, your commitment to coming to your scheduled appointments and overall cost. The overall cost of a complete treatment plan can typically be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Remember that electrolysis offers a permanent solution to unwanted hair, making it a valuable investment for long-term hair removal. Consulting with a licensed electrologist who can assess your specific needs is essential.

Armpit hair 4 clients 4 different growth densities

Ask 4 of your friends to grow out their armpits for 1 month - you will get 4 different results - that's 4 treatment plans & 4 different costs.

Here’s another example: 2 men want their backs to be 100% hair free.
Man #1 is 5’2 and slender. He has two patches of hair on his shoulder blades (one on each shoulder) and some scraggly hairs across his back. Estimated number of hours of work: 15 to 20 hours

Man #2 is 6’1 and thickly built. His back is covered in a dark carpet of hair.
Estimated number of hours of work: 80 to 100 hours

4 different hair growth patterns, 4 different treatment plans & 4 different costs

4 women with facial hair, 4 different hair growth patterns, 4 different densities.

You can see why, when you ask "how much will it cost & how many sessions will it take?", we can't answer that question. It's easy to see why it's much fairer to clients to charge per minute, rather than per body part. It's impossible to create a fair, average, price per body part because of the variable factors that define a treatment.

Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal classified as permanent by the FDA

*The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through its Center for Devices & Radiological Health regulates electrolysis equipment, lasers & other medical equipment. Amid the growing popularity of laser hair removal & the extravagant claims of manufacturers & clinics, the FDA reiterated its position that only electrolysis can permanently remove hair & warned laser clinics against making such claims.

The FDA Consumer Health Information Bulletin of 27 June 2007 states: "The US. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes electrology as providing permanent hair removal. The FDA identification in Title 21, CFR, Sec. 878.5350 for needle-type epilators is: "a device intended to remove the hair by destroying the dermal papilla of a hair" As no other device for hair removal has the unique identification of "destroying the dermal papilla of a hair" only electrologists are allowed to claim permanent hair removal in their advertising"
