As a teen, you've got a bunch of options when it comes to getting rid of unwanted hair. But let's talk about electrolysis because it's pretty solid—it's safe, effective, and gives you permanent hair removal results.
Shaving and waxing? Can literally be a pain - with shaving razor burn, bumps, nicks, cuts and ingrown hairs. With waxing - well the initial wax can be pretty painful, not to mention the ingrown hairs after.. They can mess up your skin and leave you (and your skin) feeling all irritated. Laser hair removal? Well, it doesn't always work great on every skin type, it’s painful – and for some clients – can actually stimulate hair growth. To learn more about these options - read this article
Electrolysis? It works for all skin types, and works almost everywhere on your body (we just can’t work inside your nose or ear canals, but everywhere else is fair game!). It's not just for the upper lip & chin - but can even be done on the middle of the brow (monobrow/unibrow), nipples, underarms and even the abdomen! It doesn't matter where it grows, it can go!
So, if you want get started with electrolysis – this is what you need to do:
- Find a fully trained electrologist: Don't just trust anyone. Make sure you find someone who knows what they're doing. Ask around for recommendations or do research online. Look for legitimate reviews. Make sure they are comfortable working with teens. At Razor Free Electrolysis – we are – we work on all bits on all bodies!
- Get permission from your parent(s). At Razor Free Electrolysis, if you're under 19, we require parental consent to work with you. All we need is their signature on your Client Treatment Form (they have to sign in front of the Electrologist). They don't have to stay for the treatment if you don't want them there - they can take that time to go grab a coffee at our local Tim's and have a well-deserved break 😍
- Get a consultation: Make sure your will have a mandatory consultation appointment (at Razor Free Electrolysis, your consultation appointment is free!). This consultation should cover your medical history, the electrologist should explain the process of electrolysis and the hair growth cycle and what to do to prep for your treatment, what to expect during your treatment and what to for your skin after your treatment. This is your chance to ask any questions and develop a rapport with your electrologist. This is important – because you and your electrologist should be comfortable with each other. You’ll be seeing for a while, so you need to know that they’re a good fit for you – and you for them!
- Prep yourself: Your electrologist will give you the lowdown on how to get ready for your session. That might mean drinking plenty of water, staying out of the sun, and laying off the caffeine before your session (it seriously dehydrates you and being hydrated is key in an electrolysis session). Oh, and no waxing or plucking beforehand. Shaving is fine. You’ll need at least 3-7 day’s worth of growth. If the electrologist can’t see the hair, they can’t treat the follicle! - Take care after: That might involve skipping makeup and saunas for a couple of days and taking care of your skin with witch hazel and aloe vera gel or other soothing products.
