After Treatment
Your treatment doesn’t end just because you leave the salon. We consult with all of our clients and provide them with best practices for after-care. Have a look below for tips on how to keep your skin in great shape after your electrolysis appointment. Of course, if you have any questions feel free to give us a call!
What You Need to Know
- It's normal to have some redness, slight swelling, warmth & tingling on the treated area. It will usually disappear after a few hours or by the next day.
- The treated follicle stays open for approximately 3 days after the procedure
- For the first 3 days after the treatment, do not use make-up, scrubs, perfumed products or products containing alcohol.
- Avoid touching the area to prevent infection or whiteheads
- Cleanse the treated area with witch hazel and aloe.
- Use ice to close the follicle for 10-15 minutes to help reduce swelling
- Apply Bacitracin, Neosporin or another antibacterial cream to the treated area the night after your treatment. This will help your skin heal even faster, especially facial areas. Apply with Q-tips or clean hands.
- If your skin is still irritated on the second day, apply a Hydrocortisone cream (Cortisone, Cortaid, anything with 1% hydrocortisone or hydrocortisone acetate). It is anti-inflammatory and will reduce redness and swelling. Also works on pimples!
- If small scabs appear, do not scratch them away. This can cause scarring. Allow them to fall off naturally. This is nature¹s way of healing the follicle that we have treated (the scabs are lymph fluid that has drained out the follicle and dried up). Keeping the area moisturized will often curtail the formation of scabs.
- Epsom salt baths (warm, not hot!) will also promote and speed up healing time to the treated area (ie: bikini line, lets, buttocks) and is also soothing and relaxing to the body. For other treated areas, apply an Epsom salt compress: Add 1 tsp. Epsom Salt to 1/2 cup warm water and mix. Soak a washcloth in the Epsom Salt solution. Lay washcloth over the treated area for 10 minutes and repeat.
- Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds (UV exposure) for 3 days after treatment.
- Do not exercise after your treatment - go before your treatment or save that for the next day.
- Wear sunscreen daily, reapply when needed. Don't expose the treated area to UV rays (these aren't just from the sun, but are also emitted from your computer/tech screens) or tanning beds for 24-72 hours before and after treatment, to avoid hyperpigmentation of the skin.
Exfoliate & Hydrate
- Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, oil and dirt. Pores plugged with these things can result in the appearance of pimples, pustules and ingrown hairs.
- If you have an ingrown hair, exfoliating may also physically nudge the ingrown hair out of your skin.
- Do not use cleansers with exfoliating materials in them. They can get lodged in open follicles and cause small infections.
- Hydrate your skin. It can't be said enough. Dry skin results in more ingrown hairs and plugged pores. Drink lots of water and moisturize your skin.
We offer a couple of different products for exfoliation.
- The Himalayan Salt Block - sea salt is a natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and exfoliator. Use these blocks very gently on your skin.
- Renaissance Deep Exfoliating Body Mitt - Composed of 100% plant cellulose extracted from eucalyptus and spruce, it is uniquely woven in microscopic loops. The combination of the fiber and the weaving offers you professional experience with the utmost respect for your skin. These mitts are exceptionally better than any you will find at your local Dollar Store, Walmart or pharmacy!
